Storyline:The UNLV women's soccer team enters the week at 7-4 after a record-breaking weekend. Rebel junior Janae Sims scored the first hat trick in UNLV women's soccer history in a 4-2 victory at Long Beach State. Sims scored two goals within two minutes of each other to secure the victory. With that win, UNLV tied its win total from a season ago. Sunday's bid to tie the UNLV women's soccer win total set in 1998 fell short as the Rebels were blanked 4-0 by Washington State in Pullman.
UNLV Head Coach Dan Abdalla:Dan Abdalla took over the reins of the UNLV women's program in February, after serving as an assistant coach last season ... Abdalla was a former goalkeeper on the UNLV men's team in 1997 and set a school record with 321 career saves over 68 games, nine shutouts and a 1.95 GAA with the Rebels ... also new this season to the coaching staff is assistant Maren Hendershot, who was a two-time NSCAA All-American, four-time all-conference selection and 1999 MWC player of the year for BYU.
About Wyoming:The Cowgirls enter the week with off to their best start in school history with a 6-3-1 record. The Cowgirls defeated Idaho State 2-0 for the sixth win of the season and the most in school history. Head coach Anne Moore is in her second season as coach of the Cowgirls as she compiled a 4-14-1 record last season. Moore also has a career record of 11-43-3 in three years. Wyoming returns 11 starters from last season's squad including senior forward Kelly McShane who leads the team this season in goals (6) and scoring (13).
About Air Force:The Falcons begin conference play with a 2-9-1 record after snapping an eight game losing streak in the Armed Forces Tournament last weekend. Air Force lost 2-1 to Navy and defeated Army 2-1. Head coach Marty Buckley is in his eighth year at Air Force, compiling a 69-78-8 record and 11-10 last season. Buckley has ten starters returning from last year, including a pair of senior forwards, Becky Wyffels and Stephanie Rader. Wyffels and Rader lead the team in goals with five each and Rader leads the team in scoring (11). Wyffels received first team All-MWC honors last season.
Noting Last Week:UNLV 4, Long Beach State 2- This was the match in which UNLV was going to tie last season's win total, but junior forward Janae Sims stole the spotlight. Sims scored three goals en route to a 4-2 victory and the first ever hat trick in UNLV women's soccer history. Sims first goal came at 16:28 to tie the match at one. Late in the second half, Sims scored the game winning goal at 82:17. Not more than three minutes later, Sims scored again. Sims received MWC Player of the Week honers for her efforts las weekend.
Washington State 4, UNLV 0- The Rebels traveled up to Pullman for a match with the Cougars. Washington State got on the board at 19:07 and never looked back. Freshman Tania Lee led the Rebels in shots with four.
