LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's and women's basketball teams were on display in the Thomas & Mack Center Wednesday night at Fan Jam 2000, a preseason preview for Rebel fans.
In front of an estimated crowd of 2,500, the Lady Rebels kicked off the evening with a three-point shooting contest. Sophomore guard Dayna Gambill hit four of five shots in her final rack of balls to win the contest.
Constance Jinks led all scorer with 14 points in the Lady Rebels' scrimmage, including nine in the second half. Preseason All-American Linda Fr?hlich scored 11 and senior forward Brooke Ingalls chipped in with 10.
The Runnin' Rebels show got underway with the highly anticipated slam dunk contest. Junior forward Chris Richardson captured his third straight title in the event, highlighted by an amazing jam in which he leaped over the team's large ball rack.
The men followed with their own three-point contest, won by freshman guard Lafonte Johnson. Johnson then squared off against Gambill in a "Battle of the Sexes" contest and needed his last shot to pull off a one-point victory.
Preseason All-American Kaspars Kambala showed the crowd why he earned his honors, scoring 25 points in the Runnin' Rebels scrimmage in the nightcap. Sophomore Dalron Johnson and newcomer Jermaine Lewis followed with nine points apiece.
The seasons for both the men's and women's teams get underway on Tuesday, Nov. 7, in an exhibition doubleheader at the Thomas & Mack Center. The Lady Rebels will start things off against the Chinese National Team at 5:00 p.m., followed by the Runnin' Rebels' game against the Delta Jammers at 7:35 p.m.
