LAS VEGAS - UNLV went on a 14-2 run over a nine-minute stretch in the second half to come from behind and defeat Charlotte, 60-55, in the championship game of the Cox Communications/Lady Rebel Shootout at the Thomas & Mack Center on Saturday.
The Lady Rebels (3-0) were down by as many as 11 early in the second half, but rebounded to score eight unanswered points and cut the 49ers (1-3) lead to just three. UNLV, which had led only once at 2-0, regained the lead with 6:34 to play on a free throw by Constance Jinks, 47-46.
That free throw sparked the late run by the Rebels which was sealed by an Erin Johansson three-pointer that put UNLV up by six, 54-48.
For the second straight night, the Lady Rebels were led in scoring by Jinks, who finished with 17 points. Along with an 18-point effort against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Friday, Jinks earned tournament MVP honors.
Joining Jinks on the all-tournament team were junior Kinesha Davis and freshman Petra Gl?ser. Davis played a key role during the Rebels' stretch run and finished with eight points and four rebounds. Gl?ser enjoyed an eight-point, five-rebound, five-assist performance on Saturday to go with her 17 points against UAPB on Friday. Charlotte's Alicia Abernathy and Tonya Phifer were also selected to the all-tournament squad.
The tournament victory is the first for the Rebels in two years. They began the 1998-99 season with a 4-0 record, capped by a title at the Golden Gopher Classic in Minneapolis.
UNLV will enjoy a week of rest before embraking upon its first road trip of the year. The Lady Rebels will face Northeastern University in Evanston, Ill. on Friday, Dec. 1 in the Roger L. White Invitational hosted by Northwestern.
Consolation Game
St. John's 73, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 63
Rasheedah Brown scored 17 points and dished out six assists to lead St. John's (2-2) to a 73-63 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-3) in the consolation game of the Cox Communications/Lady Rebel Shootout on Saturday.
St. John's never trailed in the game and led by as many as 17 in the first half. The Golden Lions pulled within six points with 9:17 to play, but the Red Storm made five straight free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.
Brown was named to the all-tournament team.
