I am not going to tell you about our trip to Chicago this weekend (okay, we actually spent most our time in Evanston. There is a difference - just ask Constance or Dishawn, the Chicago girls). You will have to read Brooke's NoteBrooke to find out all the details on that. I did however get the chance to interview our other freshman, Petra Gl?ser. Since I know everyone wants to learn more about our new German standout, I tried to ask questions that help you learn things you might not get a chance to find out on your own. So here is the scoop on Petra Gl?ser:
NAME: Petra Gl?ser
YEAR: Freshman
HEIGHT: 6'5". Really I am only that, and I don't like to be made taller than I am.
AGE: 19
HOROSCOPE SIGN: Libra
FAVORITE THING BESIDES BASKETBALL: Sleeping, drawing, hanging out with friends.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU PLAYED BASKETBALL?: Since I was 12 years old, so for seven years.
BEST BASKETBALL MOMENT: Qualifications for European Championships: (under 20 in August 1999)- we played really well.
MOST EMBARASSING MOMENT IN BASKETBALL: Under 20 European Championships August 2000. I played so bad.
WHERE CAN YOU BE FOUND ON CAMPUS: Gym (practice), Computer Lab
PLACES THAT YOU HAVE LIVED: I have always lived in Germany.
WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING THING FOR YOU?: My height is the most challenging. I am 6'5" and I think that I have always been a whole head taller than everybody all my life.
WHY UNLV?: Because of a teammate in Germany (on my club team). "Biggie- is her nickname, she is a great person on and off the court. She knew coach Miller, and Biggie said that I should come to UNLV, and I trusted her.
FIRST THOUGHT OF UNLV?: Didn't like it.
BIGGEST CONCERN COMING TO UNLV: That I wouldn't get along with the people.
YOUR THOUGHTS ON PRESEASON CONDITIONING: Expected it to be much harder.
WHAT PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU: I like to draw, and that I have a lot to say. I just don't like talking in front of a lot of people, just small groups of people I know, friends.
HARDEST PART OF COMING TO THE STATES: Leaving my family and friends in Germany.
PREGAME RITUAL: I don't really have one.
MAJOR: Undecided. Maybe International Business.
FAVORITE COLOR: Dark colors, like dark green, dark blue, dark purple.
FAVORITE HOLIDAY: Christmas, except for this one since I will not be able to spend it with my family.
FAVORITE PLACE TO VISIT: Italy, Toscana.
FAVORITE AMERICAN FOOD: Chocolate Muffins.
FAVORITE AMERICAN HOLIDAY: Thanksgiving. Lots of good food.
SCARIEST MOMENT: No Fear, or "Respect All Fear NONE" as Coach Miller would say.
WORST NIGHTMARE or DREAM: That someone close to me dies.
FAVORITE CANDY: Nutella (GERMAN)
FAVORTIE SNACK: Fruit.
PLACE YOU WOULD MOST LIKE TO TRAVEL TO: Australia
WHY JERSEY #15?. It was the jersey that they gave me in Germany. In Germany they numbers only go 1-15, with the bigger numbers for the post players. So I just never changed it.
FAVORITE MUSIC: I like everything but Techno, and old music that my parents listen to in Germany. (She started to sing it, but I couldn't add the sound effects to this.)
SOMETHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO LEARN: I want to learn how to dance, I missed that class in Germany (it is taught it in school in Germany), but I don't want to learn in a large class, more private I think I would like.
HOW MANY LANGUAGES DO YOU SPEAK?: German, English and a little Spanish and French.
PERSON SHE LOOKS UP TO MOST: Birgit Eggert (Biggie)
WHO INSPIRED HER TO PLAY BASKETBALL: Parents
FAVORITE MOVIE: Cruel Intentions
FAVORITE ACTOR: Brad Pitt is hot.
HOTTEST GUY ON CAMPUS: "Hannibal"
DREAM: To find a nice guy, all around nice, nice to look at, nice to be with, nice to me! Treats me right. All around good guy.
WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A GUY?: He doesn't have to be a great athlete, but he has to have some of the same interests. So he has to at least like sports.
MOST IMPORTANT IN A RELATIONSHIP: Understanding and Communication.
FIRST THING PETRA NOTICES WHEN SHE MEETS A GUY: Height, and eyes.
CHARACTERISTIC SHE DOESN'T LIKE: I can't stand it when guys like to talk all about themselves. Macho guys. I don't like those.
BEST LOOKING MEN'S ATHLETIC TEAM AT UNLV: Well I don't know many guys at UNLV YET, but I have noticed one. There is this one guy on the football team who I think is cute, but I don't know his name. (Or at least she wouldn't give it.)
FRIENDLIEST TEAM AT UNLV: My team of course. *She smiles.
GOALS or ASPIRATIONS IN LIFE: I am trying to find them, I wait till the last second to make decisions. I am Irresolute.
NOTABLE QUOTE: "It is some nobody."
TEAM NOTES ON PETRA: She is TALL, and she is always smiling. Great person, and a great athlete and team player. She is always the last one to everything, but is never late just waits to the last minute.
YOUR TAKE ON BEING LAST TO EVERYTHING: I don't like to waste time waiting, so I go just in time to be ON time.
PEOPLE SHOULD REMEMBER YOU BY?: Not my height, but my personal characteristics.
