SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Amy Ewert's steal and layup with 1:20 left to play put Utah up by five and sealed a 56-52 victory for the Utes over the UNLV women's basketball team in the Jon M. Huntsman Center on Saturday.
The Rebels (11-11, 3-6 MWC) led 45-42 with about five minutes to play, but allowed the Utes (17-5, 8-1 MWC) to go on a 11-2 run down the stretch, capped by Ewert's layup.
UNLV had fought back from a 31-25 halftime deficit and captured its first lead of the game with eight minutes to play, going up 41-40 on a driving layup by Constance Jinks. The two teams traded buckets over the next five minutes and knotted the game at 47 with 2:38 to play.
Excellent defense by Utah held the Rebels to their second-lowest scoring output of the season. UNLV shot just 33 percent from the field and had 10 shots blocked by the Utes.
Constance Jinks led all scorers with 16 points and added 8 rebounds. Linda Fr?hlich managed only 14 points on 5-of-13 shooting from the field and grabbed 9 boards.
The Lady Rebels return home where they will be off until Thursday, Feb. 17 when they host MWC rival Air Force at 7:35 p.m. in the Thomas and Mack Center.
