SALT LAKE CITY - The 57th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team won the No. 1 match in both singles and doubles but it was not enough to hold off 29th-ranked New Mexico Sunday.
Playing indoors at the Eccles Tennis Center located at the University of Utah, the Lobos defeated the Lady Rebels 6-3. UNLV fell to 4-2 while UNM improved to 5-4.
At the top spot, 23rd-ranked Katarina Malec continued to roll through Mountain West Conference opponents with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over 44th-ranked Ana Friganovic. It was Malec's third straight-set victory over a ranked league opponent in as many days. The senior from Warsaw, Poland, ran her win streak to six and improved her season record to 19-3.
The Lobos, however, won all five remaining singles points, including both three-setters, to clinch the match before UNLV won two of three doubles points. Malec teamed with Marianne Bakken for a tie-breaker win at the top position, 9-8, over Friganovic and Anna Hedberg. Veronica Goude and Urska Radanovic also teamed for a win at the third spot.
UNLV is off until traveling to Fresno State Feb. 23.
