LAS VEGAS - UNLV finished day one of the 2000 Classic at Sunset Park 2-0 with wins over Cal-Poly (7-1) and Oregon State (1-0).
In game one, the Rebels took on the Cal-Poly Mustangs. Nicole Truax allowed only three hits in her seven innings on the mound. UNLV struck first with a RBI base hit in the second inning by Marisa Martinez to score Racheal Goodpaster. The Mustangs answered back with a run of their own in the same inning. UNLV then scored three runs in the third, which was initiated by Linda Garza, who reached on base by an error committed by the third baseman. Charelle Ainslie then smacked a double to bring in Garza. Goodpaster hit a double of her own to score Ainslie making the score 3-1 Rebels. Nicole Miller drove in the final run of the inning with a long single to left field, which brought in Goodpaster. The Rebels scored three more times in the final inning that was capped by Kelly DeArman, who came in as a pinch hitter. DeArman hit a sacrifice fly ball to centerfield to drive in Miller and seal the game for the Rebels. UNLV went on to defeat Cal-Poly 7-1.
Game two was controlled by the pitching of both UNLV and Oregon State. Geney Orris was nearly perfect for the Rebels, allowing only one hit in the entire game and striking out five. The lone run was scored by UNLV in the sixth inning when Nicole Miller drove in Linda Garza with a deep base hit to centerfield. Garza displayed her speed by rounding the bases from first and would also give the Rebels the lead for good. UNLV downed Oregon State 1-0.
