LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Rebel softball team closed out the 2000 Classic Tournament on Sunday with a record of 4-1. The Rebels fell to Cal-Berkeley (9-3) who went on to become the 2000 Classic Champions with an undefeated record of 5-0. UNLV is now 9-4 on the season and will compete against Tulsa on Thursday, February 24th at the Rebel Diamond softball field at 1:00pm.
In the game against the Golden Bears of Cal-Berkeley, UNLV was able to compete with the Pac-10 powerhouse for most of the game. It wasn't until the sixth inning where Cal-Berkeley pulled away with two runs and added two more in the seventh.
Racheal Goodpaster hit her fourth homerun and collected her 14th RBI of the season in the third inning with a two-run homer that drove in Charelle Ainslie making the score 4-2. In the next inning, Ainslie drove in the speedy Danielle Ferreira, who had been sacrificed to second by a bunting Erica Vollweiler. At the end of the fifth, the Golden Bears had built a 5-3 lead on the Rebels.
In the end, Cal-Berkeley would be too strong for the Rebels and would go on to win 9-3.
