Softball Splits Final Day Of Tri-Tourney

LAS VEGAS - The Rebel softball team concluded the UNLV Tri-Tourney with a 7-6 loss to Texas A&M and 3-1 victory over Pacific. UNLV finishes the tournament 1-3 and is 11-7 on the season. The Rebels will spend most of March on the road beginning with the USL Mini-Tourney March 11-12 in Layfayette, Louis.

The Pacific Tigers were declared the 2000 UNLV Tri-Tourney Champions after tallying a record of 3-1 over the weekend. Texas A&M finished 2-2 for second place and the Rebels placed third with a 1-3 mark.

In the first game against the Aggies, UNLV scored in the top of the first inning with a double by Nicole Miller that drove in Linda Garza. Texas answered back in the bottom of the first with two runs. Freshman Celeste Alvarado hit a solo homerun in the top of the second to tie A&M 2-2. That marked Alvarado's first homerun of her Rebel career.

UNLV began to pull away with three runs scored in the top of the third. Charelle Ainslie belted a double to score Erica Vollweiler and Miller hit a two-run homer to make the count 5-3 in favor of the Rebels. Miller has compiled 17 RBI for the year and has three homeruns.

The Aggies tied the score in the fourth inning to make the score 5-5. UNLV then took back the lead in the fifth with a RBI single by Geney Orris that brought home Ainslie, who leads the team with 17 runs on the year.

In the bottom of the seventh, UNLV could not hold off a one-out rally by A&M. The winning score would arrive via a bases loaded walk from Nicole Truax to pinch hitter Krissy Renner.

In the second game, UOP scored one run in the top of the first and would hold on to a 1-0 lead until late in the sixth inning. Vollweiler began the one out rally with a walk. Garza also battled her way into a walk and advanced Vollweiler to second. Ainslie singled to load the bases. Miller reached first on a fielder's choice and two runs scored on a throwing error made by the shortstop. Alvarado sealed the win with a RBI single that drove in Ainslie.
