Golf Struggles On Day One

March 10, 2000

LAS VEGAS - The ninth-ranked UNLV men's golf team did not take advantage of ideal weather conditions and tied for 11th place out of 14 teams at the first round of the third annual Las Vegas Intercollegiate being staged at the par-72, 7,193-yard Desert Inn Country Club Friday.

The Rebels shot a five-over-par 293 to tie with North Carolina, and sit a full 19 shots back of leader Georgia Tech (274), which is the nation's top-ranked team. Texas is in second at 278 and Oklahoma State is seven back at 281.

Individually, Jeremy Anderson, ranked ninth nationally, led the Rebels at even-par 72, good enough for a tie at 22nd place. Scott Lander (73) tied for 38th, Michael Kirk and Tyler Mays (74) tied for 49th and Brien Davis (75) tied for 56th.

The Rebels also had three entries play as individuals: Calvin Kupeyan (72/T22nd), Scott Wingfield (73/T38th) and Robert Sul (80/73rd).

Round two tees off Saturday and the final 18 holes are scheduled for Sunday.
