March 12, 2000

LAS VEGAS - The ninth-ranked UNLV men's golf team shot a final-round two-over-par 290 and finished tied for eighth place at the third annual Las Vegas Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,193-yard Desert Inn Country Club Sunday.

The Rebels (293-285-290-868) tied with Houston (291-287-290-868) at four-over for the tournament, 20 shots back of first place. Arizona State (285-281-282-848), which tied with Oklahoma State (281-276-291-848) and late-charging Minnesota (283-284-281-848) after 54 holes, won in a playoff to earn the team championship. The Golden Gophers fell out after the first playoff hole before the Sun Devils used one less stroke on the second hole to clinch the victory.

Individually, Jeremy Anderson, ranked ninth nationally, led the Rebels with a 72-69-71--212, good enough for a tie for 14th place. Anderson finished five shots back of first place, where D.J. Trahan of Clemson (73-68-66-207) and Matt Brost of Texas finished (67-70-70-207) in a tie. In a playoff, Trahan needed three holes to outlast Brost for the tournament's medalist honors.

Michael Kirk (74-70-75-219) of UNLV fell 12 spots to finish in a tie for 35th along with Tyler Mays (74-72-73-219). Scott Lander (73-78-71-222) moved up nine spots to finish tied for 55th while Brien Davis (75-74-79-228) closed in a tie for 67th.

The Rebels also had three entries play as individuals: Calvin Kupeyan (72-73-74--219/T35th), Scott Wingfield (73-78-75--226/T65th) and Robert Sul (80-81-76--237/75th).
