Rebels Find Offensive Groove
UNLV has turned it on offensively as of late, topping the 80-point barrier three times in the team's last five games. The Lady Rebels scored 86 points to defeat Air Force at home, then posted wins over Colorado State and Wyoming on the road with totals of 84 and 96. The 96 points scored in the regular season finale at Wyoming was a season high. Free throws have helped the team reach those totals, going 19-27 (.704) from the line against CSU and 17-22 (.773) from the stripe against Wyoming.
From Way Downtown
Aside from improved performances at the free throw line, the Lady Rebels are scoring from behind the arc as well. In its last three wins, UNLVhas shot an amazing 57.5 percent (23-40) from three-point land. Erin Johansson has been the catalyst, going a combined 10-19 (.526) and averaging 10.0 ppg in those games, just better than her season average of 7.2 ppg.
Gettin' It Done With Defense
Since allowing BYU to score a season-high 98 points in their Feb. 10 matchup in Provo, the Lady Rebels have allowed just one of their last six opponents to top the 70-point mark and held three of those teams to 56 or less, going 5-1 in those games. Four times in that span, UNLVheld its oposition under 43 percent shooting from the field.
Road Warriors
After going 5-7 on the road last year, including a 2-5 mark in WAC play, the Rebels steeped up their road game this season. UNLV posted a 6-6 record on the road this year and went 4-3 in MWC road games. Included in those wins are victories at New Mexico and Colorado State. UNLV was the only team in the league to topple the Lobos in The Pit and ended a conference home court winning streak by CSU that spanned more than two years.
Lady Rebels Playing First Full Season In The Mack This Year
Home has been nice for UNLV, too. This season marked the first full season that the Lady Rebels played at the Thomas & Mack Center. In the past, UNLV played most of its home games at Lied Gymnasium, however over the years the Lady Rebels have played in the big building. The Lady Rebels have hosted 107 regular season games at the T&M over 17 years and own a mark of 81-26 (.757) in those games. UNLV finished the home regular season at 9-4. All of the MWC Tourney games will be played at the Mack.
Crashing The Boards
One reason UNLV has been successful this season has been its ability to pull down rebounds. As a team, the Rebels lead the conference in total rebounds (1,089), rebounding margin (+3.6) and offensive rebounds (15.78 rpg). Individually, Linda Fr?hlich tops the league in total (11.3), offensive (3.54) and defensive rebounding (7.81). Freshman Carlesa Dixon has upped her season average to 6.0 rpg and ranks 8th in the league with Kinesha Davis right behind in 9th, also at 6.0 rpg. Dixon is third in the MWC in offensive boards (2.96), and Davis is 9th (2.38).
Miller Leads UNLV To Second Straight Winning Season
Inheriting a program that had only won four games in each of the previous three years, head coach Regina Miller has led UNLV to its second straight winning season. The Lady Rebels clinched their guarantee of that after defeating Colorado State last Thursday night, 84-69. Miller guided the Rebels to a 17-11 overall finish last year and could match that record with a victory over New Mexico. UNLV has not posted back-to-back winning seasons since doing it in 1992-93 and 1993-94.
Rebels Also Post Winning Conference Record
Not only did UNLV win more games than lost overall, it will also finish over .500 in the Mountain West Conference with an 8-6 mark. The Rebels, who were 3-6 in the league at one point, won their last five games within the circuit and clinched a winning conference mark in the season finale at Wyoming. The last time the Rebels finished above .500 in conference play was in 1994-95, going 10-8 in Big West Conference action.
New League Offers Few Surprises
The MWC coaches and media had a pretty good idea how things would turn out in the conference before play began this season. Both the coaches' and media's preseason polls turned out identical, and both were accurate except for one team. BYU rallied in the last week of the season to defeat both Air Force and New Mexico to climb from fourth place to second in the league standings. Except for the Cougars two-spot leap, the remainder of conference teams finished just as predicted.
Fr?hlich Named MWC Player of the Year
The league was also dead on when it named Linda Fr?hlich the preseaosn MWC Player of the Year. Fr?hlich earned the regular season honor on Monday when the conference's coaches chose her as the Mountain West Conference's first ever Player of the Year. She was an overwhelming choice after leading the conference in scoring, rebounding and steals and finishing fourth in the MWC in steals. She was a first team All-WAC selection last year, as well as the WAC Freshman of the Year and the USBWA National Freshman of the Year.
Fr?hlich Earns MWC Player of the Week Award...And Again...And Again
Linda Fr?hlich was named UNLV's first Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week winner on Dec. 23. She averaged 24.5 ppg and 14.0 rpg for the week and was named to the Nassau Sun Splash Shootout All-Tournament team. She captured the award for the second time on Jan. 10, averaging 22.5 points and 12 rebounds for the week as UNLV defeated both Navy and Vaparaiso. She crowned the regular season with a third Player of the Week Award, capturing the award in the final week of the season after leading the Rebels to a pair of conference road wins and averaging 24.5 ppg, 8.0 rpg and 8.0 apg. She was the only player this year to earn the nod more than once. Her latest effort was the fifth time in her career she had been so honored, winning the WAC Mountain Division Player of the Week award twice last year.
This Season's UNLV Honors
In addition to Fr?hlich's MWC Player of the Week awards, she was named to the Nassau Sun Splash Shootout's All-Tournament team after scoring 26 points and pulling down 10 rebounds vs. Liberty and scoring 23 points with a career-high 18 rebounds vs. Cal State Sacramento...Fr?hlich was also named to the Cox Communications/Lady Rebel Shootout All-Tournament team after scoring 24 points and pulling down 13 rebounds vs. Weber State and scoring 37 points and contributing 14 rebounds vs. Southeast Missouri State. She was named to the All-Mountain West Conference Newcomer team after finishing the regular season 13th in the conference in scoring with 11.8 ppg. Her 13.4 ppg in conference games was second on the team and fifth in the conference.
Fr?hlich Honored Off the Court
Along with all her playing honors this season, perhaps the most prestigious award Fr?hlich captured was her selection to the third team GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America team. The sophomore has a 3.50 GPA through three semesters at UNLV and has not yet declared a major.
Fr?hlich Notches 1,000th Career Point At SDSU

Rebel Youth Making A Big Splash
After losing seven seniors from its 1998-99 squad, UNLV has relied on its youth to carry the team this season. Two starters return from last season - sophomores Linda Fr?hlich and Erin Johansson. The rest of the starting lineup is filled with players in their first season in the Scarlet and Gray. Kinesha Davis is a sophomore transfer from Western Illinois who sat out the 1998-99 season. Junior Dayna Gambill transferred from Lassen College and is in her first season at the Division 1 level. Freshman Carlesa Dixon moved into the starting lineup after Brooke Ingalls broke her foot in practice seven games into the season. Of the rest of the Rebels' roster, only senior Thyre Brooks and sophomore Courtney Swanson had any Division 1 playing experience heading into the season.

Jinks Is The Rebels' Sixth Man
