LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Rebel softball team concluded its four-game home stand by splitting a two-game series with Big West member New Mexico State Thursday. UNLV fell to the Roadrunners in game one, 6-2, but stormed back in the second contest to defeat NMS, 7-3. UNLV improves to 15-23 on the season and will travel to San Diego, Calif. and Cedar City, Utah to take on the Aztecs (April 8)and the Utes (April 11).
In game one, the Roadrunners struck first with a run scoring via a wild pitch by Geney Orris. They then added two more in the third to put them up 3-0. Racheal Goodpaster answered for the Rebels through a sacrifice bunt by Celeste Alvarado. Orris sacrificed flied in the bottom of the 5th to bring in Erica Vollweiler and pull the Rebels within one going into the 6th, but the Rebels would go on to give up three runs and the victory to New Mexico State.
Refusing to continue its three-game slump, UNLV remained focused for the second contest. Orris put the Rebels on the board in the first inning driving in Vollweiler and Nicole Miller with a double and earning her 19th and 20th RBI of the season. New Mexico St. scored two runs in the fourth and pulled ahead in the top of the 6th to make the score 3-2. In the bottom of the 6th with the bases loaded, Nicole Miller belted a grand slam homerun to put the game out of reach for good and earned her team high 29th RBI in the process.
