Women's Track & Field

UNLV Invitational Under Way

April 7, 2000

LAS VEGAS - Southern Utah leads the men's competition and Idaho is atop the women's standings after the first day of competition of the UNLV Track and Field Invitational at Myron Partridge Stadium and Sheila Tarr Smith Field Friday.

Idaho scored 34 points through the only two events contested on Friday - the hammer and the shot put. The Vandals went 1-2 in the hammer, with Aloha Santiago winning the event (165-3) and Molly Leonard finishing second (158-2).

Shana Ball gave the Vandals a second victory as she topped UNLV's Jessica Marable in the shot put. Ball tossed a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 51-2.75. Marable, who only used one throw, finished second with a mark of 50-10.25, which also provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA Championships.

Western State follows Idaho in the team standings with 12 points while both BYU and UNLV have 10 apiece.

On the men's side, Troy Ford of Southern Utah won the shot put with a heave of 52-0 while teammate Gjaison White finished second (50-8.25) to lead a 1-2 finish by the Thunderbirds and give them a slight 19-16 edge in the team standings of Western State.

J.D. McCormack was the men's hammer throw winner (138-4) and led a 1-2 finish by the Mountaineers.

Action in the second and final day of the meet will resume tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. with the women's javelin and pole vault. Running events will begin at 11:00 a.m. and should continue through 4:00.
