PALM DESERT, Calif. - UNLV's Scott Lander is the first day leader at the Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championships after shooting an opening-round 68 at the PGA West Course Monday and the Rebels have a seven-stroke edge in the team standings after carding eight-under par 280.
On Lander's heels are teammates Michael Kirk and Jeremy Anderson, who both recorded two-under par scores on Monday. They are in a three-way tie for third, putting three Rebels in the top 5 after the first round.
Freshman Calvin Kupeyan shot even par to conclude the day tied for seventh and round out UNLV's scorers. But No. 5 player Robert Sul was only one stroke over the average and is tied for 11th overall.
Colorado State shot 287 for the day to finish in second place, seven strokes behind the Rebels. New Mexico and BYU followed tied for third, but both shot eight-over par and are a distant 16 strokes off the lead.
The second round will begin on Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. PDT.
