MADERA, Calif. - The UNLV golf team shot a seven-under par 281 in the second round of the NCAA West Regional Championships to move to 12-under for the tournament and retain its fifth-place standing at Riverbend Golf Course on Friday.

Senior Michael Kirk followed his two-under opening round yesterday with a four-under 68 today and stands tied for fourth place, just one shot off the lead, which is currently shared by three players - Arizona's Derek Gillespie, UCLA's Parker McLachlin and USC's Alex Kuyumjian.

Freshman Calvin Kupeyan, who was tied for third after a first-round 68, fired even par on Friday and dropped to a tie for 16th overall at four-under.

Senior Jeremy Anderson is five strokes off the lead after a second-round 73 dropped him to two-under for the tourney. He is followed by freshman Robert Sul, who is tied for 39th overall at even, and junior Scott Lander, who is tied for 81st at five-over.

The Rebels are looking for at least a top-eight finish which would propel them to their 12th straight appearance at the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Opelika, Ala., from May 31-June 3. Ten strokes presently separate them from California and Idaho, who are tied for ninth place. BYU still leads the tournament at -19, clinging to a one-stroke lead over Arizona.

The final round of the regional will be played on Saturday with tee times beginning at 7:12 a.m.
