MADERA, Calif. - The UNLV golf team shot a nine-under par 279 in the final round of the NCAA West Regional Championships to move to 21-under for the tournament and tie for a second-place finish at Riverbend Golf Course on Friday.
The Rebels' finish earns them a spot at the NCAA Championships, which will be held at Grand National Course in Opelika, Ala., from May 31 to June 3. It will be UNLV's 12th consecutive appearance in the national finals.
Leading the way for UNLV was freshman Calvin Kupeyan, who carded his second round of 68 in the tournament to finish eight-under par and tied for second place overall, the highest postseason finish by a freshman in school history.
Senior Jeremy Anderson, the Rebels' most consistent player, rebounded from a one-over par round Friday to fire a four-under 68 and finish six-under, tied for fith.
Senior Michael Kirk, who was just one stroke off the lead after the second round, tripped a bit down the stretch, shooting 73 today to finish at five-under and tied for ninth.
Freshman Robert Sul finished even for the day and the tournament, tying him for 38th place overall, and junior Scott Lander shot a one-under 71 to finish tied for 66th at four-over par.
The Rebels will return to Las Vegas and have just one week to prepare for the NCAA Championships.
