Softball Splits Final Doubleheader Of Season

FORT COLLINS - The UNLV Rebel softball team completed the 2000 regular season Sunday with a doubleheader split against Colorado State, 1-2 and 5-2. UNLV finished the season 17-38 overall and 3-17 in the Mountain West. CSU ends up 18-30 for the year and 8-12 in league play.

The Rebels will now concentrate on the Inaugural Mountain West Conference softball tournament. The double-elimination event will take place in Salt Lake City, Utah May 11-13.

In game one, CSU pitcher Kyla Kiester kept the Rebels scoreless for most of the game. Down 2-0 into the seventh inning, the Rebels pulled to within one before the Rams were able close out the game. UNLV finished the contests with one run on four hits. Designated player Geney Orris went 2-for-3 at the plate in the losing effort.

In the nightcap, the Rebels were able to rebound and finish the season on a positive note. UNLV pounded out 13 hits off the Ram's pitching staff and tallied five runs in the victory. Nicole Truax and Orris combined to hold CSU to just two runs on five hits. Nicole Miller continued her stellar conference play with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate and added a RBI. Catcher's Debbie Hatch and Courtney McCandless contributed to the win by going a combined 4-for-4 at the plate. Senior Charelle Ainslie led the team with 12 put outs and scored one run.
