Women's Soccer Defeats Long Beach

Long Beach, Calif. - The UNLV women's soccer team defeated Long Beach State in a historical game for the Rebels on Friday afternoon.

Junior Janae Sims scored the first hat trick in UNLV women's soccer history and scored twice in the final eight minutes to lead the Rebels to an exciting 4-2 victory. With the victory, theRebels move to 7-3 on the season, matching their win total from a year ago.

Sims put the Rebels up for good at the 82:17 mark stealing the ball and racing down field uncontested. 49er goalie Hannah Cochrun challenged the play but Sims put the ball past her for the game winner from about 20 yards out. Not more than two minutes later, Sims scored the insurance goal. Sims took a pass at midfield and beat 49er midfielder Kim Stempokski for the goal.

The first half featured a lot of excitement. LBSU scored just 29 seconds into the match on a shot by Marcia Rewoldt from Stempokski. UNLV tied the match at one as Sims tallied her first ggoal of the evening at the 16:28 mark with the assist going to sophomore Cosette Joffs. Avbout 12 minutes later, the 49ers took the lead once again to go up 2-1. The Rebels showed great poise as junior Anita Pedford tied the game at two at the 36:26 mark on a 25 yard shot off a throw in by Joffs.

Rebel freshman keeper, Heidi Hart won her fourth match of the season as she recorded six saves and did not allow a goal in the final 60 minutes of play. The Rebels travel to Washington Stateto take on the 6-3 Cougars on Sunday, game time is 1:00 p.m. The Rebels will open Mountain West Conference play at home on Friday, 0ct. 6 at 6:00 p.m. against Wyoming
