Women's Soccer Kicks Off Home Slate

Storyline:The UNLV women's soccer team enters the week 2-2 after splitting two games in the Utah State Tournament last week in Logan, Utah ... the Rebels begin a two-game home stand on Thursday against Idaho and then on Monday versus Bowling Green ... UNLV defeated Utah State 2-0 in the first round of the Utah State Tournament last Thursday and then on Saturday, the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Rebels squared off with Iowa winning 3-0 ... sophomore Cosette Joffs leads the team in goals (2), and scoring (4).

UNLV Head Coach Dan Abdalla:Dan Abdalla took over the reins of the UNLV women's program in February, after serving as an assistant coach last season ... Abdalla was a former goalkeeper on the UNLV men's team in 1997 and set a school record with 321 career saves over 68 games, nine shutouts and a 1.95 GAA with the Rebels ... also new this season to the coaching staff is assistant Maren Hendershot, who was a two-time NSCAA All-American, four-time all-conference selection and 1999 MWC player of the year for BYU.

About Idaho:The Vandals (1-3) make their first trip to Las Vegas to take on the Rebels on Thursday ... Idaho, also a third year program, comes off a 1-1 record last week in the Governor's Cup at Idaho State, notching their first victory of the season in a 4-3 marathon double-overtime match against Weber State ... during the WSU match, freshman Emily Nelson scored a hat trick and an assist for the Vandals ... Nelson now has four goals in four matches ... the Vandals then played in-state rival Idaho State, losing 2-0 in the final round of the tournament ... Idaho returns 14 starters from last season's 9-8-2 team that was tabbed as one of the most improved teams in 1999 by Soccer Buzz ... coach Larry Foster enters his third year at Idaho with a record of 13-21-2 and 47-44-14 career in his seventh season ... top returnees for the Vandals this season are junior Megan Cummings, who led the team in scoring in `99 and sophomore Sarah Best ... this is the first ever meeting between Idaho and UNLV ... the Vandals will then meet Bowling Green on Saturday at 7:00 at Johann Field.

About Bowling Green:The Falcons will travel to Detroit Mercy on Wednesday, before heading to Las Vegas for two games this weekend ... the first is against Idaho on Saturday at Johann Field and the other against the Rebels on Monday, Sept. 11 ... Bowling Green (2-0), picked eighth preseason in the MAC, comes off a 2-0 shutout of St. Bonaventure and and a 3-2 overtime win over Bucknell ... the Bucknell match marked the third time in four years that the Falcons have scored a "golden goal" in August.... first-year head coach Andy Richards has 11 starters returning from last season's 5-11-3 team and 2-6-3 in the Mid-American Conference, including sophomore Jill Conover who led the team in scoring last season and senior Michelle Lisy who led the team in goals (8) last year ... Bowling Green has never met the Rebels or Idaho.

Noting Last Week:UNLV 2, Utah State 0- The Rebels picked up their second win of the season in a 2-0 shutout of the Aggies ... sophomore Cosette Joffs gave the Rebels a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute of the match ... not more than six minutes later, junior Jessica Chavez scored the insurance goal for the 2-0 victory ... senior keepers Shannon Wilson and sophomore Heidi Hart combined for the first shutout of the season.

Iowa 3, UNLV 0- The Rebels dropped a 3-0 decision to the Hawkeyes in the weekend half of the Utah State Tournament ... UNLV had chances to climb back into the match but just couldn't get the job done.
