LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's basketball team found its defense on Saturday night, limiting BYU to just 35 percent shooting from the floor as it rolled to a 61-50 win at the Thomas & Mack Center.

The Lady Rebels (11-3, 1-1) jumped out to an early lead that grew throughout the first half. UNLV owned a 31-18 edge at the break, holding the Cougars (8-7, 0-2) to eight field goals and forcing 13 turnovers.

UNLV continued its run in the second half, going up by as many as 19 points with 9:23 to play. Although BYU battled back, it was unable to pull closer than eight points with 2:23 left, and the Rebels held on for their first Mountain West Conference victory this season.

Kinesha Davis was one of three Rebels to score in double figures, leading all players with a season-high 16 points. Linda Fr?hlich scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds while freshman Petra Gl?ser went a perfect 6-for-6 from the line to finish with 12 points.

BYU was led on the evening by sophomore Erin Thorn, who scored 11 points on 3-of-10 three-point shooting and pulled down seven rebounds.

The victory by UNLV snaps a five-game winning streak by the Cougars in the series. It was the Rebels' first win in the series since the 1983-84 season.

It also allowed the Rebels to join San Diego State and New Mexico in a three-way tie for third place in the MWC, each at 1-1. UNLV, which wrapped up a seven-game home stand with the win, will face New Mexico in its next outing on Thursday, Jan. 18 at The Pit in Albuquerque.
