LAS VEGAS - The 55th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team begins its 2001 season by hosting 74th-ranked San Diego Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on campus.
The match, originally scheduled for 2 p.m., has been moved up to a 1 p.m. start time. The Lady Rebels, who enter the season as the defending Mountain West Conference champions, will then face 10th-ranked Pepperdine on Sunday at 10 a.m.
UNLV is led by 39th-ranked Agnieszka Abram, a freshman from Warsaw, Poland, and Pauline Janus, a sophomore who transferred from Azusa Pacific, and is also from Poland.
The team also returns Marianne Bakken, who teamed with former Lady Rebel standout Katarina Malec to earn the program's first-ever NCAA tournament doubles victory last summer and finished ranked 26th after posting a 25-4 record.
Lady Rebel head coach Kevin Cory heads into his second season at the school after leading his first team to a 15-9 record.
