LAS VEGAS - In its conference opener, the UNLV men's soccer team shutout defending Mountain Pacific Sports Federation champion San Jose State, 1-0, Friday night at Peter Johann Memorial Field in Las Vegas.
Both teams could not find the net in the first period, leading to the eventual outcome in the second half. Just minutes into the second stanza, junior defender Ben Hooker would deny a Spartan goal, taking the ball off the line for an excellent recovery. SJSU continued to pose several threats on goal for the next 35 minutes and even outshot UNLV 15-6, but the Rebels would have the last word.
In the 74th minute, sophomore Alex Hernandez took a corner kick from the right side and lobbed the ball deep into the goal box. Junior Tuomas Talvio rebounded the save by the Spartans' keeper, which was deflected in traffic for the game-winning goal by junior defender Reggie Bolden. This marked his first goal of the season and fifth in his career.
Senior goalkeeper Scott Winstead earned his first shutout of the year with six saves, while SJSU's Eddie Dominguez took the loss with three saves. UNLV raises its record to 6-4 overall, 1-0 MPSF and San Jose State goes to 6-5 overall, 0-1 MPSF. Just a year ago, the Spartans advanced to the NCAA Men's College Cup with an undefeated record.
The Rebels take the next day off, but will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 14 as they host Fresno State in a MPSF home match slated for noon.
