Island Winds Blow Rebels Off Course

KAPOLEI, Hawaii - The UNLV women's golf team struggled through heavy winds and poor weather conditions to finish tied for 16th place after 36 holes at the 5th Annual Rainbow Wahine Fall Invitational at Kapolei Golf Course on Monday.

The Rebels carded rounds of 324 and 327 and are tied with Oregon at 75-over par in the 19-team field. New Mexico (294-302--596) leads the way at 20-over, and the Lobos' Claudia Ferrini (72-73--145) has a three-stroke edge in the individual race.

"It was windy and we were not mentally tough today," head coach Kelley Hester said. "And that falls on the shoulders of the coach. I'll try to a better job of getting us prepared to play in these types of conditions. We'll see improvement in playing in these conditions."

Leading the Rebels on the day was freshman Hwanhee Lee, who is tied for 37th after rounds of 79 and 78 for a 13-over par 157.

Freshman Tina Mabanta (80-80--160) followed Lee and is tied for 54th. Junior Erin Borcherts (79-80--159) is one stroke behind Mabanta, tied for 60th.

Sophomore Autumn Monteiro (86-87--173) contributed in the first round before matching teammate Christine Hentzner (92-87--179) in the nightcap. The two sit 95th and 100th, respectively.

The Rebels play the final round of the tournament and the fall schedule at 8:00 a.m. HST on Tuesday.
