KAPOLEI, Hawaii - UNLV junior Erin Borcherts carded a career low round of 72 on Tuesday to lead the Rebels' women's golf team to a 16th-place finish at the Rainbow Wahine Fall Invitational.
Borcherts, a Las Vegas native and graduate of Cimarron-Memorial High School, also goes down in school history as the first player to score par for a round. Her 72 on the Kapolei Golf Course topped the 73 shot by Hwanhee Lee at the Oregon State Shanico Invitational earlier this month.
"Today's round was better," UNLV head coach Kelley Hester said. "We have some things to work on before the spring, but at the same time, we showed progress today and we'll celebrate the little victories."
A solid team effort behind Borcherts' score helped the Rebels (324-327-306--957) to a 306 on the afternoon, allowing them to pull away from Oregon, with whom UNLV was tied after Monday's play.
New Mexico cruised to victory, shooting par as a team in Tuesday's final round to finish 20-over par, 21 strokes ahead of Arizona. The Lobos' Kailin Downs could not hold off U of A's Loreno Ochoa, though. Ochoa shot a final-round 69 to claim a two-stroke victory.
Contributing for the Rebels were freshmen Tina Mabanta, Hwanhee Lee and Christine Hentzner. Mabanta (80-80-76) shot a 76 to tie for 46th overall at 20-over. Lee (79-78-79--236) also finished at 20-over as she and Hentzner (92-87-79--258) threw in rounds of 79. Autumn Monteiro (86-87-86--259) capped the Rebels' lineup, tied for 99th.
The Wahine Fall Invitational concludes the fall portion of UNLV's schedule. The Rebels will train throughout the winter and compete next at the Lady Aztec Invitational in San Diego on Feb. 18-19, 2002.
