STORYLINE: The UNLV womens' golf team plays in its second competition of the season this week, challenging some of the West's top teams at the Oregon State Shanico Invitational, in Corvallis, Ore., from Oct. 8-10. The 54-hole event will be played at the host school's Trysting Tree Golf Course (Par 72--6,072 Yards), with 18 holes to be played on each of the three days.
ABOUT UNLV: The competition will be just the second in school history for the first-year team ... UNLV looks to bounce back from a horrendous start, finishing in 15th place, 100 strokes over par at the Mason Rudolph Championship three weeks ago ... Trysting Tree will be familiar territory for junior Erin Borcherts, who transferred to UNLV after playing golf for the Beavers for two seasons.
FIELD: A total of 19 teams and three individuals face off at the Shanico, including 12th-ranked New Mexico and 18th-ranked Arizona. Along with the Lobos, Mountain West Conference foe BYU will attend. Also competing are: Boise State, California, Eastern Washington, Idaho State, Idaho, Long Beach State, Northern Arizona, Oregon State, Oregon, Portland State, Stanford, San Francisco, Washington, Washington State and Weber State.
LINEUP: UNLV's lineup for the OSU Shanico Invitational will be junior Erin Borcherts and freshmen Christine Hentzner, Hwanhee Lee, Tina Mabanta, and Angela Olivarri. Hentzner will make her collegiate debut while the others all played in the Rebels' opener.
HEAD COACH KELLEY HESTER: UNLV women's golf head coach Kelley Hester begins her first season as UNLV's head coach and second overall as a head coach. The University of Georgia graduate spent one season at the helm at Mercer University before returning to her alma mater as an assistant coach for two seasons. Hester was a four-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs, earning All-SEC accolades three times and Academic All-America kudos twice.
RESULTS: Complete results from the OSU Shanico Invitational can be found online following each round at unlvrebels.com and at the Oregon State Official Web Site at www.osubeavers.com.
UP NEXT: Following the OSU Shanico Invitational, the Rebels take about three weeks' practice before heading to Oahu, Hawaii, to play in the Rainbow Wahine Fall Classic, Oct. 31-Nov. 1. That tournament will close the fall portion of the women's golf schedule.
