CORVALLIS, Ore. - The UNLV women's golf team began play at the OSU/Shanico Invitational on Monday, firing a team round of 307, good for eighth place after the first round at Trysting Tree Golf Course.

The Rebels' 19-over par round sets a school record for the first-year program that had previously carded a best round of 310.

"Obviously I'm not satisfied, but it's an improvement, and if we improve every time we go out, then by springtime we'll be where we need to be," head coach Kelley Hester said.

UNLV got an all-around solid team effort with three players turning in rounds of 76. Freshmen Tina Mabanta, Angela Olivarri and Hwanhee Lee are all tied for 24th place at four-over par.

Junior Erin Borcherts, who transferred to UNLV from Oregon State, struggled on the green and shot 79 on her former home course, as did fellow Rebel Christine Hentzner. The two are tied for 59th.

California was the surprise leader of the 19-team field, posting a three-stroke advantage over Arizona, 286-289. Stanford's Kim Kouwabunpat has the individual lead after shooting 67.

The Rebels will tee of the second round of play at 9:18 a.m. on Tuesday.
