CORVALLIS, Ore. - UNLV freshman golfer Hwanhee Lee recorded the best round in the program's brief history on Tuesday, carding a 73 in the second round of the Oregon State/Shanico Invitational at Trysting Tree Golf Course.
Lee (76-73--149) led the Rebels, whose 308 score was one stroke worse than Monday's round. UNLV sits in 11th place at 39-over while Lee ranks 20th in the individual race.
"Obviously I was pleased with Hwanhee's play," UNLV head coach Kelley Hester said. "She scrambled today. She didn't necessarily hit the ball great, but she was able to salvage a good round."
The one-over par effort by Lee bettered Tina Mabanta's three-over 75 at the Mason Rudolph Championship three weeks ago.
Mabanta (76-78--154) was just a shade off her own pace on Tuesday, shooting six-over par. She is tied for 38th.
The biggest surprise of the day was Christine Hentzner (79-77--156) who trimmed two strokes off Monday's total to end the day in 52nd place at 12-over.
Junior Erin Borcherts (79-80--159), a transfer from Oregon State, was not able to get on track on her former course and followed yesterday's 79 with an 80. She is in 67th place, tied with teammate Angela Olivarri (76-83--159) who slipped after an opening-round 76.
The team outlasted Northern Arizona after tying the Lumberjacks for eighth place after the opening round, but gave way to New Mexico, Idaho and Long Beach State.
"We've got a long way to go, but a lot of time to get there," Hester said. "We're moving in the right direction. We just need to try to get better every time we go out. As long as we improve every time, we'll be where we need to be come championship time."
