LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's tennis team turned in a strong showing at the Omni Hotels West Regional Championships, which were held at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego last weekend.

Two of the four Lady Rebels competing as individuals won their first-round matches while another reached the finals in the consolation draw. Also, both doubles teams won opening-round matches and one earned a spot in the quarterfinals before bowing out.

"I was very impressed with the way we competed in the regional, which is considered to be one of the strongest in the country," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "Gyorgyi Zsiros (who won four matches in the consolation draw) showed me this weekend that she has the potential to do great things for our program and then Marianne (Bakken( and Gyorgyi came close to upsetting one of the premier doubles teams in the country.

"I was also very pleased to see Agnieszka (Abram) and Tracie (Chaong) win convincingly in the first round before both lost tough matches to top players in the next round. This tournament shows me that our we have a lot to look forward to this spring."
