TEMPE, Ariz. - UNLV's top women's tennis doubles team lost in Sunday's final at the Arizona State Thunderbirds Invitational at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
Paulina Janus and Agnieszka Abram paired up to post an upset victory in their semifinal match earlier in the day, 8-5, over fourth-seeded Cindy Sureephong and Lauren Colalillo of host ASU. However, the Lady Rebels fell in the championship match, 8-3, to Rebekah Forney and Kate Ruckert of the University of Texas. The Longhorn duo reached the final by downing UNLV's Marianne Bakken and Gyorgui Zsiros in a match earlier in the day.
"Overall, I am satisfied with the way our team performed this weekend," head coach Kevin Cory said. "When you play in a tournament that has 3 perenial top 10 teams in Arizona St, Cal and Texas and hold your own you have to feel good about the effort. I was particularly impressed with our doubles play. Paulina Janus and Agniezska Abram upset the number 2 and 4 seeds en route to their appearance in the finals and Marianne Bakken and Gyorgyi Zsiros played very well reaching the semis. It was also great to see Paulina Janus back in action after some minor setbacks this fall, she played great in reaching the quarterfinals. I am excited about what the future holds for our program, we should be ready to make a jump this spring when the team season begins."
