Lady Rebels Take Down UC Irvine

Box Score

IRVINE, Calif. -Senior Linda Fr?hlich and junior Constance Jinks each had 20 points as the UNLV women's basketball team defeated UC Irvine, 71-52, Monday night at the Bren Events Center in Irvine, Calif.

Fr?hlich, an All-American forward from Oldendorf, Germany, played all but three minutes of the game recording a near triple-double with 20 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists. Jinks, a guard out of Chicago, Ill., had 20 points and seven assists. Both were perfect from the free throw line, contributing to the team's 78.9 overall percentage (15-19) for the night.

In the early going, UCI would outshoot UNLV down the stretch holding a nine-point advantage in the first nine minutes of play. Missed lay-ups and field goal opportunities led the Lady Rebels to shoot fewer than 30 percent in that particular time frame. However, a steal and lay-up by Fr?hlich at the 9:09 minute mark put UNLV back on track as the Lady Rebels tied the game up at 16-16.

From that moment on, the Lady Rebels (2-0 overall) never looked back, taking a 19-point margin of victory over the Anteaters for their second consecutive win of the 2001-02 season. Junior Wendy Gabbe had a team leading 11 points for UCI (1-1 overall). With the win, UNLV claimed its fifth straight victory over UC Irvine and upped its all-time series advantage to 27-4.

UNLV next plays host to the two-day Cox Communications/Lady Rebel Shootout on Nov. 24-25 in Las Vegas. The four-team field includes Tennessee Tech, Sacramento State and Seton Hall. The Lady Rebels face Sacramento State on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 7:30 p.m., while Tennessee Tech and Seton Hall square off at 5 p.m. The tournament consolation match will be played on Sunday, Nov. 25 at 2 p.m., followed by the championship game at 4:30 p.m.

FR?HLICH vs. THOMAS WATCH: Senior WBCA/Kodak All-American finalist Linda Fr?hlich begins her quest to break the UNLV all-time scoring record of 1,892 points held by former All-American standout Misty Thomas (1982-86). With her 20 points tonight, Fr?hlich (1,796 career points) has 97 points to go.
