LAS VEGAS - Behind a 28-point showing from senior All-American forward Linda Fr?hlich, the UNLV women's basketball team defended its Cox Communications / Lady Rebel Shootout title by defeating Tennessee Tech, 88-67, Sunday evening in the championship game of the two-day holiday tournament held at the Cox Pavilion.
Fr?hlich (Oldendorf, Germany) turned in her third double-double of the season with 13 rebounds. Junior guard Constance Jinks (Chicago, Ill.) had a near double-double with 21 points and a season-high nine assists. Both were selected to the All-Tournament Team and named Co-MVPs.
Senior Kinesha Davis (Brooklyn Center, Minn.) contributed 10 points off the bench, while junior Dishawn McCracklin (Hazel Crest, Ill.) was the game's second leading rebounder with eight boards.
The Lady Rebels (4-0) are off to their second consecutive and third season best start under UNLV coach Regina Miller. UNLV would score 32 points in the paint and take advantage of 29 points off turnovers by the Golden Eaglettes (2-2). Janet Holt led Tennessee Tech with 28 points and was named to the All-Tournament Team along with teammate Allison Clark.
UNLV will hit the road for the next two and half weeks. The Lady Rebels will first compete in the Oakland Tribune Classic hosted by Cal on Dec. 1 & 2 in Berkeley, Calif. There, they will meet No. 14 nationally ranked Georgia on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 1 p.m. All games to be broadcast locally on KENO 1460 AM and via an Internet link on unlvrebels.com.
FR?HLICH vs. THOMAS WATCH: Senior WBCA/Kodak All-American finalist Linda Fr?hlich is on the verge of breaking the UNLV all-time scoring record of 1,892 points held by former All-American standout Misty Thomas (1982-86). With her 28 points tonight, Fr?hlich (1,843 career points) has 50 more points to go.
