SAN FRANCISCO - With seven lead changes and 10 ties of the game, the UNLV women's basketball team hung on for a down-to-the-wire victory against the University of San Francisco, 71-63, Saturday night at War Memorial Gym for their seventh win of the season.
UNLV would snap the Lady Dons' four-game win streak in the final minutes of regulation. Sophomore Petra Gl?ser (Amtsberg, Germany) would be fouled with 53.4 seconds left, leaving the Lady Rebels' center to up the score, 65-61, on two free throw baskets.
Senior All-American forward Linda Fr?hlich (Oldendorf, Germany) was sent to the foul line three times with seconds remaining on the clock, connecting on 6-for-6, enroute to her game-high and season-high 30 points and nine rebounds.
Junior Constance Jinks (Chicago, Ill.) had 14 points in the cause, while Gl?ser and junior Talisha Mitchell (Stockton, Calif.) each had eight. Mitchell started against the Lady Dons, for the first call-up of her UNLV career. Junior transfer Julia Gray (Riverside, Calif.) created two key steals in the comeback.
At the 16:15 minute mark of the second half, San Francisco had its biggest lead of the game with six. USF (4-4) forced 18 UNLV turnovers and became the first team this season to take a lead in the second half against the Lady Rebels. UNLV (7-1) had averaged a 29.9 point margin of victory all year long against opponents prior to tonight's non-conference match.
After three and half weeks on the road, UNLV returns home to the Cox Pavilion for a non-conference game versus Eastern Washington on Wednesday, Dec. 19 at 7:35 p.m. The game will be broadcast live in Las Vegas on KENO 1460 AM and via an Internet link on unlvrebels.com.
