LAS VEGAS - Unable to even field a full squad because of various injuries, the 55th-ranked UNLV men's tennis team was shut out by fifth-ranked TCU, 4-0, at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Tuesday. The Rebels fell to 7-6 overall while the Horned Frogs improved to 11-2.
TCU began the match ahead 1-0 because UNLV did not have a sixth player. At the first singles position, 15th-ranked Esteban Carril swept 45th-ranked Nenad Zivkovic 6-1, 6-3. Zivkovic, who himself is hampered by a shoulder injury, had to serve underhanded in the match.
Artin Tafazoli, who normally plays in the fifth spot, was forced to move up to No. 3 and was defeated by Jimmy Haney, 6-4, 6-2. Freshman Ryan Claridge, who is also a linebacker on the Rebel football team, made his collegiate singles debut and was downed at the fifth spot, 6-0, 6-1 by Sebastian Iannariello.
Matches at No. 2 and 4 were then stopped and doubles play was cancelled.
Next up for UNLV is a home match vs. No. 71 New Mexico State on Friday while TCU returns home to face No. 27 California on March 27.
