Big Rally Gives Men's Tennis Key Win

March 23, 2001

LAS VEGAS - Gregor Skorin and Nenad Zivkovic both rebounded from losing their doubles contest 8-0 to win singles matches and lead UNLV to a key regional victory over New Mexico State, 4-3, at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Friday.

The 37th-ranked Rebels improved to 8-6 overall while the Aggies fell to 8-8. NMSU began by winning two of three doubles matches, including at No. 1 where Skorin and Zivkovic were whitewashed, to earn one team point.

In singles play, the Aggies quickly went ahead 2-0 when Rebel senior Danny Erez, who is battling through a wrist injury, had to retire just five games into the first set.

UNLV pulled even with quick victories by Artin Tafazoli at No. 5 and Leslie Eisinga at the sixth spot. Zivkovic, ranked 61st, won at the top position 6-2, 6-2 but NMSU answered with a win at the second spot to tie things at three. More than an hour later, Skorin finished off Ben Newcombe at the fourth position, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, to give UNLV the win.

The Rebels, who improved to 4-1 at Fertitta this spring, will close out their home schedule on Sunday vs. No. 41 Tulsa beginning at 11 a.m. Annual senior day festivities will include the final home matches for Zivkovic, Skorin and Erez.
