PALO ALTO, Calif. - Nickeisha Charles was the unlikely hero for the UNLV track and field team, leading the Rebels with a fourth-place finish in the 200 meters and a seventh-place showing in the 400 at the Stanford Invitational on Sunday.
Charles' performance highlighted the day for UNLV, who put out a solid all-around team effort at one of the largest track meets in the country. She clocked season bests in both races, registering a 25.54 in the 200 and 56.39 in the 400.
Erin Dangerfield also logged a good performance in the 400, finishing second in her heat in 58.18, and the Rebels' triple jump tandem of Tiffany Smith and Belisa Suarez fared well. Smith placed 13th in the event, clearing 37-04.50, and Suarez finished 19th with a mark of 35-06.00.
Although no team score was kept for the meet, it was a good measuring stick for UNLV to compare itself against some of the finest athletes in the nation. In addition to Sunday's performances, Katie Barto tallied an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 5,000 meters on Saturday and Tianika Sharrieff topped a field of 32 vying for the high jump crown.
The Rebels will return home for their final Las Vegas appearance this season. They host the UNLV Invitational on Friday, April 6 and Saturday, April 7 at Myron Partridge Track and Sheila Tarr Smith Field.
