EUGENE, Ore. - UNLV second baseman Garett Shitanishi was named to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-District VIII Baseball team on Thursday.

Shitanishi currently leads the team with a .375 (69-for-184) batting average. He has a .418 slugging percentage and is second on the team in stolen bases with nine.

The team was voted on by CoSIDA members from within the District VIII states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and the province of British Columbia. The all-district first team selections advance to the national ballot, which will be released June 5.
