BYU Eliminates Rebel Baseball At MWC Tournament

SAN DIEGO - Top-seeded BYU defeated UNLV 10-9 on Friday to eliminate the Rebels from the 2001 Mountain West Conference Tournament at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

Brad Beasley tied the game at 9-9 in the bottom of the seventh inning with a three-run home run, his eighth homer of the season and second of the tournament. BYU scored a single run in the top of the eighth and the Rebels could not answer.

Chad Harris (0-1) pitched the top of the eighth inning, giving up one run on two hits to pick up the loss for the UNLV.

Courtney Hall started on the mound for the Rebels, pitching 5.0 innings and giving up five runs on eight hits. Doug Thornton pitched 2.0 innings, giving up four runs on two hits.

Brad Maloff and Joe Maruffi combined to finish the game. Neither gave up a run.

BYU's Scott Koffman (3-1) picked up the win. He pitched the final 3.1 innings, giving up three runs on four hits.

Ryan Ruiz led the Rebels offensively, going 3-for-3 with one run scored.

Beasley went 2-for-3 with five RBIs and one run scored. David Trujillo finished 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored.

Joe Jacobitz, Brent Johnson and Trent Kitsch each added two hits in the game. Garett Shitanishi and John Cruz both supplied a single hit in the losing effort.

UNLV finishes the 2001 season with a 15-14 record in the league, 23-33 overall. The game marked the final appearance of four seniors on the Rebel squad: Brad Maloff, Brad Beasley, Trent Kitsch and C.J. Martin.

BYU advances to play New Mexico at 7:00 p.m. Friday.
