Trip To Albuquerque Canceled

Sept. 11, 2001

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's golf team has cancelled its trip to Albuquerque, N.M., scheduled for Wednesday after all commercial air travel in the U.S. was stopped following Tuesday morning's terrorist attacks.

The Rebels, which were slated to play their first-ever tournament at the Comcast/Dick McGuire Invitational beginning on Thursday, will skip the tournament and prepare for the next event on the schedule, the Mason Rudolph Championship in Nashville, Tenn., on Sept. 17.

"In light of today's events, it seems that this is the most appropriate course of action," UNLV Director of Athletics Charles Cavagnaro said.

"I'm disappointed because I've been waiting to start playing since February," UNLV women's golf head coach Kelley Hester said. "But the safety of our student-athletes comes before any event, and this is what needed to be done. There will be more golf to be played."

UNLV had planned to depart for Nashville from Albuquerque following this weekend's play, but will instead forego the trip to Albuquerque and look to go directly from Las Vegas to Nashville sometime this weekend.
