ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - It was a battle of the Mountain West Conference's top two teams Sunday afternoon on ESPN2, as the first-place UNLV women's basketball team took on the second-place New Mexico Lobos in-front of a near capacity crowd of 17,215 at The Pit.
Not only did the conference opener surpass an all-time school attendance record, but it would also be the first time for the Lady Rebels to make an appearance on national television since 1993. Senior All-American candidate Linda Fr?hlich (Oldendorf, Germany) and junior phenomenon Constance Jinks (Chicago, Ill.) shined throughout and gave the show of their careers at UNLV.
The pair accounted for 70 percent of UNLV's points as the Lady Rebels downed the Lobos 62-53 to extend the team's current win streak to nine games. Fr?hlich produced her eighth double-double of the season with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Jinks had a game-high 25 points and six boards, scoring 17 of her points in the first half.
The Lady Rebels took an 11-point lead into halftime and led as much as 13. New Mexico inched closer in the second half, but the defensive effort by UNLV was unstoppable. UNM converted only 4-of-29 three-point attempts throughout the game.
Sophomore center Petra Gl?ser (Amtsberg, Germany) had nine points and five rebounds helping the Lady Rebels to outrebound the Lobos 47-36. Senior reserve Kinesha Davis (Brooklyn Center, Minn.) was a key player off the bench pouring in seven points and grabbing seven rebounds, while freshman Sherry McCracklin (Hazel Crest, Ill.) added a free throw to round out all UNLV scorers.
With the victory, UNLV snapped New Mexico's six-game winning streak and became only the second team this year, to beat the Lobos (11-4 overall, 0-1 MWC) at home in The Pit. The Lady Rebels improve to 13-1 overall, 1-0 MWC, their best start of the season since 1993-94.
UNLV has a six-day layoff until its next conference matchup on Saturday, Jan. 12 versus San Diego State at 7:35 p.m. in the Thomas & Mack Center. The game will be broadcast on KENO 1460 AM radio and via an Internet link on unlvrebels.com.
