HENDERSON, Nev. - UNLV freshman Sunny Oh shot a school-record 70 and leads the field at the Las Vegas Founder Women's Collegiate Showdown following second-round play on Tuesday.

Playing in just her fourth tournament as a collegian, Oh was on pace to shoot 68 before back-to-back bogeys on 16 and 17. Regardless, her two-under par score betters the 71 carded by teammate Hwanhee Lee earlier this year and goes down as just the second sub-par round in school history.

"Sunny is confident player," UNLV head coach Missy Ringler said. "She believes she should shoot par or better every time she steps onto the golf course, so her play today is not a big surprise to me. She hit her irons well and putted well, and without a little slip there at the end, she finishes four-under."

The Rebels also broke the school mark for a team round, firing a three-over 291. The previous best by a UNLV team came in the final round of last season in which the Rebels shot a 13-over par 297 at the Mountain West Conference Championship.

"It is just amazing that these girls, as young as they are, can play so well," Ringler said. "We've have a great group of talented players from top to bottom, and for us to be a powerhouse team, we have to have balance, one through five. It's nice to have the ability to shoot a school record on our home course."

Despite the team's best-ever round, the Rebels lost their position atop the leaderboard. New Mexico scorched the Anthem Country Club Course (Par 72, 6,129 Yards) for a five-under par 283 and now lead UNLV by five strokes. Pepperdine sits in third place, eight strokes behind the hosts.

Sophomore Tina Mabanta, who began the day one stroke off the lead, matched her first-round score with another 74 and sits alone in seventh place.

The Rebels got a boost from Lee, who trimmed seven shots off yesterday's 79 for even par. She is tied for 12th place at seven-over, one shot ahead of teammate Christine Hentzner. Hentzner's 75 put four Rebels in the top 15 and rounded out the team's scoring, which did not include a 79 from freshman Elena Kurokawa.

The Lobos boast three players among the top 10, including sophomore Kailin Downs. Playing in the same pairing, Downs matched Oh's 70 and trails her by a single stroke. Both Downs and Oh topped Pepperdine's Katherine Hull, the nation's top-ranked player, who carded a 74 and is tied for eighth place at five-over par.

Final-round play will begin with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m. PST.
