College Women's Golf Comes To Vegas

STORYLINE: The first-ever women's collegiate golf event in Las Vegas will begin on Monday, Nov. 11, as the UNLV women's golf team hosts the Las Vegas Founders Women's Collegiate Showdown. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will be played at the Rebels' home course, Anthem Country Club (Par 72--6,194 Yards), with a single 18-hole round scheduled for each day. Play begins at 8:30 a.m. PST from split tees on the first two days, and Wednesday's final round commences with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start. Standard four-of-five scoring will be used to calculate team totals. The Showdown wraps up the Lady Rebels' fall season.

RESULTS: Daily results will be faxed to UNLV's regular media and to each participating school and will be posted on the UNLV Official Athletic Site, unlvrebels.com.

ABOUT UNLV: The Rebels have soared in the rankings after a productive fall, and enter the weke ranked 41st in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. In its last competition, UNLV finished sixth at the Mercedes-Benz Women's Intercollegiate and defeated six of the country's top 50 teams. Freshman Sunny Oh, who has led the Rebels in two of three tournaments this fall, is the highest-ranked individual at 88th.

THE SHOWDOWN FIELD: Aside from featuring the nation's top-ranked player in Pepperdine's Katherine Hull, the Showdown also two top-20 teams, 12 in the top 100 and all six from the Mountain West Conference. Additionally, Hull and teammate Lindsey Wright both rank in the top 10 nationally and New Mexico's Kailin Downs, ranked 32nd, is the returning MWC Player of the Year. UNLV hosts 14 other teams: BYU, Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, Eastern Washington, Hawaii, No. 17 New Mexico, Oregon, No. 13 Pepperdine, San Diego State, San Jose State, Texas A&M, Washington and Wyoming.

THE LINEUP: All nine players on the Rebels' roster will play in the Showdown. Christine Hentzner, Hwanhee Lee, Elena Kurokawa, Sunny Oh and Tina Mabanta will make up UNLV's five and the other four will play as individuals.

HEAD COACH MISSY RINGLER: UNLV women's golf head coach Missy Ringler is in her first year at UNLV. She took over for Kelley Hester, who left to become the head coach at Arkansas. An All-Big Eight golfer at Iowa State from 1990-95, Ringler spent the last three years as the head coach at the University of Minnesota. She and her husband, Lance, are expecting their first child in January.
