CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Islanders are undefeated no more as the UNLV women's basketball team ended Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's 10-game home winning streak by claiming a 55-38 road victory Saturday night at Circle K Court.
Led by senior All-America candidate Constance Jinks (Chicago, Ill.) and her game-high 20 points, the Lady Rebels jumped out to a marginal 10-0 lead in the first half of play before TAMUCC scored its first basket on a layup made by freshman Terra Andrews at 14:15. UNLV would never trail in the game.
For the Lady Rebels, senior Talisha Mitchell (Stockton, Calif.) got things done on both ends of the court ending the night with a season-high 11 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Sherry McCracklin (Hazel Crest, Ill.) also scored in double figures with 11 points, while senior Julia Gray (Riverside, Calif.) added seven points and six steals to the 17-point blowout.
TAMUCC did not lead at halftime for the first time this year and drop to 5-1 on the season. Both team's committed 25 turnovers, while the Lady Rebels turned in a team season-high seven blocks, four of which junior Padra Strong (Fayetteville, N.C.) collected to mark a career-high in the category.
For the Islanders, senior Kristin Rogers and Andrews each scored a team-high 10 points in the loss. TAMUCC last suffered defeat at home on Dec. 30, 2001 to Montana State.
UNLV (4-1) remains on the road next week participating in the University of Hawai'i Invitational to be held on Dec. 14-15 in Honolulu. The Lady Rebels will open tournament play versus Long Island University on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. (PST). They will then meet the winner of host Hawai'i and Kentucky on Sunday, Dec. 15 in the consolation or championship game, scheduled for a 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. (PST) start.
