SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The 56th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team used its impressive depth to easily earn its first road victory of the season, 6-1, over Santa Clara at the University Tennis Center Saturday.

The Lady Rebels improved to 4-1 overall and 1-1 on the road while the Broncos dropped to 3-4.

With a threat of rain in the area, the teams began with singles play where UNLV took five of six matches, only losing at the top position as 59th-ranked Paulina Janus retired after dropping the first set.

Winning for UNLV were Gyorgyi Zsiros at No. 2, Agnieszka Abram at No. 3, Tracie Chong at No. 4, Leentjie Oosterhuizen at No. 5 and Marianne Bakken on the sixth court.

In doubles, Bakken and Zsiros moved up to the top spot and won 8-1. Chong and Oosterhuizen pulled out a 9-7 victory at No. 2 to earn UNLV the team point despite a loss at No. 3.

"I feel we are off to a really good start to the spring season," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "I am most happy with our depth this year. After splitting on the road, we now have a couple of challenging weeks ahead and we look forward to meeting those challenges."

UNLV is next in action this Saturday when it begins a 10-match homestand by hosting 64th-rankedLoyola Marymount. That will be followed by a home tournament March 1-3, which will feature six ranked teams in the eight-school field.
