Rebels Nip Buffs To Win Own Tourney

Feb. 17, 2002

LAS VEGAS - It was d?j? vu all over again for the 59th-ranked UNLV men's tennis team as for the second consecutive season it came back to defeat Colorado to win its own tournament at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Sunday.

The Rebels (2-2) won their spring invitational for the seventh straight year by rallying past the surging Buffaloes (3-1) 4-3 in windy and cool conditions.

CU began the day by winning an intense doubles point by taking two of three matches. After dropping the No. 1 match-up, the Buffs won 9-7 at the third spot and took a 9-8 tiebreaker at No. 2 for the team point.

In singles play, CU took a commanding 3-0 lead by earning straight-set wins at courts three and four. However, Thomas Schneiter put his team on the board with a 6-4, 6-0 win at the No. 1 spot while Andreas Maurer won 6-4, 6-4 at the sixth position. Leslie Eisinga rallied at No. 5, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, to tie things before freshman Aviram Salomon used a second-set tiebreaker, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) for the deciding team point.

"I'm real proud of the guys," UNLV head coach Larry Easley said. "It seems like this tournament comes down to the final point every year and fortunately we have come through in that spot for a few years now."

In other action, 72nd-ranked New Mexico State shut out Nevada, Reno to win third place while Utah State won an abbreviated match, 4-1, over Idaho State to claim fifth. Weber State, which had a bye in the losers' bracket Sunday, came in seventh.

The Rebels are idle until hosting Robert Morris College on March 5.
