SAN DIEGO - UNLV freshman golfer Hwanhee Lee overcame heavy winds and rainy conditions to shoot a 76 and finish just two strokes behind the leader after the first round of the Lady Aztec Invitational at the par-73 Lake San Marcos Country Club on Sunday.
UC Irvine's Stella Lee shot a one-over 74 and sits atop a seven-person logjam, all within three shots of the Anteaters' top player.
Included in that logjam were Colorado State's Mayumi Motoyama, Stephanie Linnell and Trisha Quick, and the Rams hold a commanding 11-stroke lead in the team race after an opening-round 308.
Hwanhee Lee's efforts were good enough to propel the Rebels to 11th, 23 shots behind the leader. Freshman Christine Hentzner offered the most support, tying for 32nd individually with an eight-over par 81.
Tina Mabanta shot 86 and Ayeesha Kosugi fired an 88 to round out the Rebels' scoring. Junior Erin Borcherts' 90 was not figured into the team score.
Final-round play will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, with similar weather conditions expected.
