STORYLINE: The UNLV womens' golf team opens the spring portion of its 2001-02 schedule on Sunday, Feb. 17 at the Lady Aztec Invitational in San Diego. The 36-hole event will be played at Lake San Marcos Country Club (Par 73--6,080 Yards) with 18 holes played on both Sunday and Monday.
ABOUT UNLV: The first-year program struggled a bit in the fall, but has continued to work, develop and improve. Only one upper-classman (junior Erin Borcherts) is on head coach Kelley Hester's roster, but touted freshmen Hwanhee Lee and Tina Mabanta have consistently improved since the fall. The Lady Aztec Invitational will be just the fourth tournament ever for the Rebels and the first of three straight visits to California.
FIELD: San Diego State will host 19 other teams: Cal State Northridge, Colorado State, Denver, Hawaii, Illinois, Kent State, Michigan, Long Beach State, Northern Arizona, Oregon, Portland, Portland State, Sacramento State, Southern Illinois, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UNLV, Washington and Weber State.
LINEUP: UNLV's lineup for the Lady Aztec Invitational will be junior Erin Borcherts and freshmen Christine Hentzner, Hwanhee Lee, Tina Mabanta, and Ayeesha Kosugi.
HEAD COACH KELLEY HESTER: UNLV women's golf head coach Kelley Hester begins her first season as UNLV's head coach and second overall as a head coach. The University of Georgia graduate spent one season at the helm at Mercer University before returning to her alma mater as an assistant coach for two seasons. Hester was a four-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs, earning All-SEC accolades three times and Academic All-America kudos twice.
RESULTS: Complete results from the Lady Aztec Invitational can be found online following each round at unlvrebels.com and at the San Diego State Official Web Site at www.goaztecs.com.
UP NEXT: Following the Lady Aztec Invitational, the Rebels return to California to play in the Spartan Invitational hosted by San Jose State. The Corral de Tierra Club in Salinas, Calif. will house the event March 4-6.
