HONOLULU - The UNLV men's golf team added one stroke to its second-round total at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate on Thursday, faring much better than most of the 20-team field as the Rebels climbed from fifth place to third and sit just 10 strokes out of first heading into Friday's final round.
San Diego State's amazing 14-under-par round on Wednesday kept it atop the leaderbaord, but the Aztecs shot a seven-over 295 on Thursday to give back some ground. At seven-under for the tourney, SDSU leads second-place Auburn by seven shots and the Rebels by 10.
The Aztecs' John Lieber remains the individual leader, following Wednesday's 65 with a one-under 71. He holds a two-stroke edge over Auburn's Kevin Haefner and a five-stroke advantage over top Rebel Ryan Moore.
After firing 70 on Wednesday, Moore coolly returned with a one-under 71 and is tied for fifth place overall.
Senior Clark Corbett charged ahead on the leaderboard with a 70, the Rebels' best round of the day. At one-under par, Corbett is tied for 10th.
Brandon Askew slipped to one-over par with a 74 on Thursday, while both Brien Davis and Calvin Kupeyan finished 18 in 75.
The Rebels and Moore will take their last try to make up ground on the leaders on Friday at 7:30 a.m. HST.
