Two Players Declared Ineligible

Feb. 8, 2002

LAS VEGAS - Two international student-athletes on the women's basketball team at UNLV have been declared ineligible for Saturday night's game at San Diego State, athletics director John Robinson announced Friday.

Petra Gl?ser is ineligible for eight games effective immediately and Linda Fr?hlich is ineligible for Saturday's game so that the university can fully review her eligibility status.

"UNLV's inquiry into this matter came about as a result of a nationwide sweep by the NCAA of institutions who have international players," Robinson said. "It appears that UNLV is one of dozens of institutions nationally who have been asked to look into the status of their international players.

"The decision regarding Ms. Gl?ser's ineligible status results from university findings that, as a resident of Germany prior to enrolling at UNLV in 2000, she competed on what, under the current NCAA definition, was a professional team."

Ms. Gl?ser signed no contract, had no agent and received no compensation for her participation on that team.

"At this time, we are looking into Linda Fr?hlich's competition history while in Germany in relation to NCAA amateurism regulations," Robinson said. "The question with Ms. Fr?hlich involves the source of expenses provided to athletes on the team on which she participated.

"This is a very frustrating and unfortunate situation for these outstanding student-athletes," Robinson said. "However, given the NCAA mandate regarding amateurism, UNLV is compelled to abide by the regulations in place, to make Ms. Gl?ser ineligible for eight games and to fully look into Ms. Fr?hlich's situation."

Petra Gl?ser is a sophomore from Amtsberg, Germany, who came to UNLV in fall 2000. Linda Fr?hlich is a senior from Oldendorf, Germany, who has been at UNLV since fall 1998.
