LAS VEGAS - The 17th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team did not lose a set in singles en route to a 7-0 whitewashing of Utah at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Saturday.

The Lady Rebels won their fifth straight to improve to 12-2 on the year, including 11-1 at home and 2-0 in the Mountain West Conference, while the Utes fell to 7-9 overall and 1-2 in the league.

Playing in highly windy conditions, UNLV began the day by taking two of three doubles matches for one team point. Winning for UNLV were Paulina Janus and Agnieszka Abram at No.1 and Marianne Bakken and Gyorgyi Zsiros at No. 2.

In singles play, 71st-ranked Janus flew by Sheri Esrock at the top spot 6-1, 6-1, while 88th-ranked Zsiros held off Linn Ronnberg at No. 2, 7-6, 6-0. Also winning in straight sets for the hosts were Abram at No. 3, Tracie Chong at No. 4, Bakken at No. 5 and Amy Hadziosmanovic at the sixth court.

"It's a great feeling to get through our opening weekend of conference play at 2-0," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said after his team recorded its fifth shutout this season. "This sets the stage for a huge match at San Diego State (March 28)."

However, before the Lady Rebels return to MWC action, they close out their home schedule by hosting No. 32 Auburn on Senior Day Tuesday beginning at 10:30 a.m.

"Auburn presents a tremendous challenge for us and we need to stay focused," Cory said. "It will be my pleasure to honor our only senior this season, Marianne Bakken, for all of the great contributions she made during her four years here."
